How do you spell "email"?

Posted by Kelly Rusk July 26, 2006

A few months ago, I looked up the spelling of “email” in my Canadian Oxford Spelling Dictionary (the one used by the Canadian Press) and to my surprise, it was spelled “E-mail” I started to take notice in other publications, and it seems the American Press style is the same.

Yesterday, I received the Email Experience Council’s monthly newsletter, which included a survey about how to spell “email/eMail/e-mail/E-mail” It also said they were going to use the data to come up with a standard.

I’m interested to see where this goes. I’ve always followed CP style/spelling - afterall, they research the most readable spellings and styles, so it just makes sense to use it. However, “E-mail” is out of date. I think most people can agree that “email” is the norm.

Email the new snail mail?

Posted by Kelly Rusk July 21, 2006

Well who would have thought that email could ever be called the new snail mail? What a hurried world we live in huh! Well this is the latest buzz from an article I read in the Globe and Mail. It mostly applies to youth and their increasing use of IM (instant messenger), text messaging, blogs etc. But I gotta be honest, even here at card, we often flip quick questions to each other via IM. It just works well for that kind of quick chatter stuff.

But fear not, no one is predicting the death of email. Besides its usefulness in formal correspondence, it also offers the ability to send something from “one to many,” says Anne Kirah, a senior design anthropologist at Microsoft who studies people’s high-tech habits. That might include an announcement for a club or invitation to a party. Yours truly fully agrees with Anne. There will always be a place for email marketing - it has become such a popular way for people to communicate. Just try to imagine a world without email. It’s unthinkable!

Big weekend ahead for cg! I’m walking 60 KM in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer. You can find out more about this amazing event at www.endcancer.ca

Wish me luck!

Deliverability Dilemmas

Posted by Kelly Rusk July 19, 2006

Without a doubt, deliverability is one of the hottest e-topics. So when I rec’d this email from ClickZ (Subject line –> E-Mail Delivery: Marketers Still Miss Deliverability Boosters), it immediately grabbed my attention. Naturally I wondered whether we’re missing any of the deliverability boosters cuz that would be very bad! If you’re wondering the same, then this is one good read because it’s full of good tips and reminders!

BTW, don’t you love the crackberry video Kelly so graciously shared! I hope I never put mine in a swing! Yikes!

Since starting at cardcommunications, I’ve (obviously) done a lot of research about email marketing. One thing I see over and over again, is comments about how email marketing is ever changing, or changing quickly, or it’s different than it used to be, etc., etc., etc.

And of course I always believe it, I mean it wasn’t that long ago you were asking people “Do you have an email address?” instead of “What is your email address?” And you probably remember the first time you recieved an email with a photo attached and felt all warm and fuzzy inside.

But my point here and now is that yes, it’s all changing, but a lot of it stays the same (or at least is chaning s l o w l y… )

What made me think of all this, was I was browsing our monthly e-bulletin archive, when I stumbled across the feature article from the January 2003 issue.

What’s funny is first Carolyn references Quality vs Quantity for lists.. ( see her last post) and then the article goes into content, and how “less is more” (see my post from last week)

Obviously things change, and I think the reasoning in the old article is different than what we say today. For now, let’s all stop freakin’ out because it’s not changing that quickly.
