Is my email list OK?

So I’m sure everyone already engaged in email marketing out there knows with email, you need a permission-based opt-in list. However, sometimes people new to the space, and maybe those that have been managing services in house, are not sure where to draw the line.

Ideally, everyone would have a big (not pre-checked) box on all online/offline forms that says “YES! Subscribe me to your e-newsletter” but that is not always the case.

MailChimp has published a list of what seems like every possible scenario for list collection and whether or not you should use that list. Though the article is intended for MailChimp users, the guidelines can (and should!) be applied to any email service provider.
