Have you noticed more Spam in your inbox?

August 10, 2006 by Kelly Rusk

I’m pretty careful with where I post my email addresses, especially my personal ones… One day over three years ago, I made the mistake of posting with my personal account in a newsgroup. to this day I get about 30-50 messages a day!

Luckily they usually end up in my junk folder and I never even see them. Until recently, many have been coming into my inbox, and so I checked them out and each had strange text in the body, like classic literature… so I did a quick google search and found out this is what spammers are doing to get around filters!

Boy that makes me mad!

Hey Kelly!

I have managed to combat the tons of spam I get with a three level attack :-)

First level of defense is SpamAssassin as it is part of cPanel which is provided by my webhosting company. The nice thing about SpamAssassin is that this spam never reaches my Outlook inbox as it is stopped at the server level.

Second level of defense is Cloudmark, a paid subscription service that runs within my Outlook.

And third, Outlook has a junk email filter built in that catches anything that are missed by the first two.

While I don’t see any spam in my inbox, I do often have to retrieve and whitelist messages from the spam folder…and that is just fine by me :-)
