Update on Outlook 2007: From a Microsoft e-Marketer

February 27th, 2007 by Kelly Rusk

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and I don’t blame you - with all the cold weather), you’ve probably heard about Outlook 2007 changing it’s email rendering engine from IE to Word - which will mean big adjustments for email marketers who want their emails to appear correctly in the most popular email client!

While there are tons of resources about this floating around - Salima Valji, an emarketer from Microsoft, has posted a great, easy-to-digest guide for designing emails for Outlook 2007. Including links to other great resources, I definitely recommend saving this one!

It would be great if Microsoft just committed to following open standards. We can always dream I guess…

A piece I read on this considered Microsoft’s change a huge step backward for email designers. Do you agree? Thanks! ~ Janet

Hi Janet,

I definitely agree. I think many email marketers have been patiently waiting for the majority of email clients to accept new standards in web design (like Cascading Style Sheets for example) and then along comes Microsoft Outlook 2007 - the most popular business email client - which, not only does not offer new design capabilities, but it also has taken away many that email designers used to be able to do!

Only time will tell what impact this will have on the email marketing industry as a whole - but for now I bet there are a lot of bummed out designers out there!
